Day 9 - Cape Lookout State Park, OR to Newport, OR - 68.17 miles

Cape Lookout State Park wasn't as idealistic this morning as we had to climb our way out of it. The Oregon views, however, continued to impress as expansive dunes mixed their way in with the rocky cliffs. At the top of one climb, about 500 ft above sea level, we found ourselves in an unlikely forest with a sand floor and the ocean nowhere in site. Hopefully some of our pictures captured this scenery. The first roll of film should be up in about a week - thanks, Marshall! Oh, and grey whales spotted the coast on parts of today's ride. What could be better than dunes and whales? Deirdre and Seth! Today definitely ended with a new high as we met at camp on the eve of a much anticipated off-day.

  1. I am so sorry that I got a late start commenting on your blog. You guys are unbelievable! I am worried about a 12 mile bike in a triathlon and you are averaging 60 per day. I cannot wait to see the pictures. Kudos on two free nights within the first week! KEEP IT UP! Miss you. I really enjoy the "by the numbers" posts ;)

  2. Oregon sounds amazing, I'm a little jealous right now and feel bad for having neglected the pacific northwest.

Sounds like you guys are really blazing a fine trail, I just hope Cali has similarly green pastures.

  3. I wish I was riding along beside you on that gorgeous coast ride, though the ups and downs have to hurt.
Funny, I was thinking of your tushies yesterday and wondering how they were holding up: how long does it take to get off the bike as the sun is going down?
You guys are painting great pictures for us of how beautiful it is. I may use some quotes next year to teach setting in writing workshop!
Any church signs out there Austin?

  5. hi steph and austin!!!!!!
its morgan, and paige is sleeping here on my shoulder. it sounds like you are having a great trip so far, despite the problems with other forms of transportation...i guess it is a sign that you should just stick with your own legs and bike. If you ever want to get back to Greenwich, you should start now. Just kidding. Anyways, tonight were the greenwich fireworks, not too impressive but still great for the fourth of july. I hope you have a fun and adventurous holiday where ever you are. Today, Paige and I biked about 25 miles...I know, nothing comparred to the two of you, but our butts are sore!! Also, today Paige and I signed up to do a 50 mile ride on July 25 to raise money for cancer. Enough about us. I hope you are enjoying the Pacific North West and are getting excited to reach California!!! If you want to stay on the beach in a house in Santa Cruise, or need a bike shop or some restaurants or anything in the San Jose Area, text me.
Hope you are well, and keep riding!! Enjoy, I wish I could do it with you!
    LOVE,
    Morgan and Paige
